Entertainer Danny La Rue has died at his home in Kent at the age of 81. La Rue's spokeswoman told
the PA News Agency that the star had died after suffering from cancer.
"Danny died peacefully in his sleep just before midnight last night after a short illness," she
said.
"His beloved companion Annie Galbraith was with him at their home in Kent," she added.
La Rue made a career out of his vaudeville drag act and was a huge star in the 1970s and 1980s and
was at one time the highest-paid entertainer in Britain, according to The Stage newspaper.
He disliked being called a drag artist, preferring the term "comic in a frock".
La Rue made few appearances on television, but played a leading role in keeping the traditions of
music hall and pantomime alive.
He received an OBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace in 2002 who admitted to being a long-time fan
of the entertainer.
La Rue, who was born Daniel Patrick Carroll in Cork, Ireland, moved to London with his mother when
he was nine.
He first donned his wig and eyelashes during a naval concert party, having been sent to Singapore as
part of Lord Mountbatten's invasion task force towards the end of World War II.

So Long Danny
Danny La Rue - the world’s most glamorous woman
And the most charming man in the business gone but not forgotten.
I know you were sad when dear Jack Hanson died,
And now we are the sad ones and oh how we’ve cried.
My brother let me know - it was all over the news
Annie Galbraith told the world and now everyone is sharing their views
I’m glad she was with you and you’d not been ill too long.
All the papers are saying you were a huge huge star, and they are not wrong
I remember I met you once, you seemed to me so tall
In a blue velvet suit with fancy trim it was at the Drill Hall
You had a huge smile and said ‘I’m so famous you know’
You beamed and announced ‘They call me Mr and Mrs Soho!’
I even went to your club once, but just for a drink,
this was in the 90’s so was it still yours? I don’t think
I have over the years become such a huge, huge fan
I’ve got all your stuff, pics, autographs, movies and show programmes
My prize possession apart from come spy with me -
‘Settle down, get out of town and say bye bye, bye bye‘ on DVD
Is the menu from La Rues – all French and fancy, very outré
Mixed grill la Rue, oeufs au lard and my great favourite – crepe Danny!
So now you are top billing - drag queen to the stars
Dear Daniel Patrick Carroll we remember you, so fond in our hearts
Who will now sing mother Kelly and all the other old songs,
We’ll miss you, your drags and your riches we’re so sorry you’ve gone

Such sad news.
I read his boigraphy once and he knew ABSOLUTLEY EVERYONE that was worth knowing throughout his life. He will be greatly missed. Please British Television show a proper tribute and several broadcasts of The Good Old Days which would be fitting.

Fond Memories of Danny
The first time I had the pleasure of meeting Danny was back in the 70's at the City Varieties Theatre in Leeds, when he was doing 'The Good Old Days'.
Years later, our paths crossed again when he was one of our Celebrity Judges at the Mr Gay UK Contest Grand Final in Birmingham.
We became good friends and often spoke on the telephone.
If there was ever anything going on that I didn't invite him to he would go mad, however if I did invite him he would always tell me that he was too busy and proceed to give me a full run down of his next 6 months engagements.
He said to me that I must keep asking him to events though as he would much rather be looked over than over looked!
I also remember being in a car with him once when 2 separate people came up to him asking himm to sing Danny Boy for them but he always said he wouldn't sing it as it was an unlucky song. Then when the car window was wound back up he would say I wish they'd stop asking, I can't stand that fxxxxxx song.
It really surprised me as he was so polite in public.
He will be dearly missed but the fond memories I have of him will last forever.
